Reserach unit
My research focuses on Ambulatory Monitoring and Assessment, which is an innovative methodology that puts everyday life under the spotlight and places emphasis on the ecological validity of research findings. The advent of pocket-sized computers and digital recording systems for physiological and behavioral data has simplified the acquisition of data considerably. Computer-assisted methodologies facilitate investigations in real-life situations in which relevant behavior can be studied much more effectively than in the artificial laboratory-based research environment.
I use ambulatory monitoring mainly in patients with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) to assess physiological, behavioral and psychological symptoms simultaneously. This is of utmost importance when one considers that psychological and physiological symptoms are not always congruent and can change synchronously as well as asynchronously across time. Real-time assessment is particularly important when symptom reporting may be influenced by biased recollection and cognitive reconstruction of the past. Finally, multiple assessment points enable us to investigate within subject changes; setting or context specific relationships and temporal dynamics, such as in the affective instability in BPD.
Furthermore, I am interested in statistical approaches to track instable symptoms and in the influence of dissociation on behavioral, emotional and physiological responses in BPD.
